Advanced Diploma in Midwifery Programme
Nurse - Midwife
A nurse - midwife is a registered nurse who is qualified to practice midwifery and is registered with the Midwives Board of Malaysia.
Any registered nurse trained in a government or private college can be a nurse – midwife upon completion of a one year Diploma in Midwifery course in Murni Nursing College.
General Objectives
The objectives of this programme is to:
1. Prepare a nurse midwife to be, to be competent , skilled and knowlegable midwifery
practitioners who are able to conduct safe deliveries in both hospital and community
setting.
2. Reduce maternal and infant mortality rate
Those who are interested in a career as registered nurse midwife can look forward to some exciting job prospects. Nurse midwife are in high demand in most government and private hospitals, health clinics, and birth centres for their experties and skills. There is also a great demand for nurse midwife in foreign countries especially in Middle East. They are not only perform basic nursing care and conduct deliveries but also certain functions normally done by a doctors particularly in rural centres such as prescribing certain medications, setting iv drip, suturing and etc in an emergency situation.
Job scope
Apart from basic nursing roles and responsibilities a nurse midwife is able to:
1. Assess health of mother and baby during pregnancy, labour and postnatal
period.
2. Provide health education and supervise mother during pregnancy , labour and postnatal
period.
3. Conduct deliveries on her own responsibility and care for the mothers and newborn in the
hospital and community.
4. Treat minor ailments to mother and babies where necessary.
5. Make referal of mother and baby to hospital and appropriate agenciesfor further
management.
6. Provide family planning counseling and normal gynaecological services such as breast
examination, pap smears and preventive health screening.
